CAT Forklift History

Caterpillar Inc. is a leading manufacturer of equipment in the construction, agricultural, and mining equipment. Known as CAT for short, the company also produces engines, industrial turbines and locomotives. Caterpillar Inc. has been headquartered in Peoria, Illinois since 1967. Cat Lift Trucks produces materials handling equipment, such as forklifts, (also known as lift trucks), stackers, and pallet trucks (also known as pallet jacks). Cat Lift Trucks is based in Houston, TX, and is a part of MCFA. Both companies are perhaps best known for the striking color “Caterpillar Yellow” featured on all of their equipment.

Caterpillar Inc. traces its origins to a merger between C. L. Best Tractor Company and the Holt Manufacturing company in 1925 - which led to the establishment of the Caterpillar Tractor Company, based in California. The company is reported to have gotten its name from a staff photographer who, after seeing the equipment move, noted that it “crawled like a Caterpillar.” Benjamin Holt, of the Holt Manufacturing Company, jumped on the phrase, and Caterpillar was born.

In 1931 Caterpillar released the first true motor grader - the Auto Patrol - and started to produce its first diesel tractor model - the Caterpiller Diesel Sixty Tractor. In 1937, Caterpillar machines helped complete the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. In the following decades, the company continued to innovate and produce new tractors, bulldozers, track loaders, and scrapers. Their products supported the Allies during WWII, started the construction of more than 70,000 miles of highway in the United States, and the helped start the construction of the Bhakra Dam in India.
