Nissan manufactured its first forklift in 1957. Mass production began in 1961 in Japan. Nissan was distributing to America by 1965. In 1988, Nissan acquired Barrett Industrial Trucks and began to manufacture in the US. In 2000, Nissan merged with another large Japanese manufacturer, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Nissan Forklift Corporation is now headquartered in Marengo, Illinois.
