Bobcat History

Bobcat is a manufacturer of construction and farm equipment based in America. It is part of the Doosan group in South Korea. Bobcat’s headquarters are in West Fargo, North Dakota. It’s European headquarters are in Waterloo, Belgium.

Bobcat compact skid steers and loaders were originally conceptualized and created to be able to maneuver in tight spaces on the 2nd story of a poultry pole barn. They needed to be light enough to operate on a second story, while still providing the function necessary. There were many early iterations of the Bobcat - originally known as a Melroe - from the M60 to the M200 to the M400 and M440. They were first developed with three wheels, and were eventually altered to have four. In the 1960s, they continued to develop new models with improvements, such as the M500, M600 and M610. These had 4 cylinder engines up to 30 horsepower. The M610 was produced until 1982. In 1971, the M371 model, known as the Mini Bob, entered the scene. It was the first model that would fit through a 36” opening.

Bobcat now produces not only skid steer loaders but also compact track loaders, telehandlers, backhoe loaders, compact excavators and other small hydraulic equipment. They are known for being “quick, tough, and agile,” - like a Bobcat.
